Hayabusa Fightwear recently came out with a new MMA gear line, the Tokushu Series. One of the new products in this series is a new version of their Hayabusa Hybrid Pro MMA Gloves. This article will give you an idea of the new features and also make some comparisons to the prior version of the Hybrid MMA Gloves.

One of the first features that struck me as real different was the palm area of the glove. The palm of hybrid gloves are what is called open palm. The open palm design allows for use in both MMA sparring and also grappling. The padding allows the fighter to do standup sparring and at the same time, if the fight goes to the ground, fighters can grab with their hands. This is important because fighters don’t want to be constrained by the equipment they are wearing.

The new Tokushu series hybrid gloves are very similar to the 4oz Pro MMA Gloves. The “Y” design has been incorporated into the Hybrids. They used to have a padded outer thumb. Whether this is a good thing remains to be seen. Many other makes of hybrid gloves still have the padded thumb design.

The new hybrid glove line has an expanded selection of sizes. The prior version offered 2 sizes: small/medium and large/extra-large. The new Tokushu series now offer small, medium, large and extra-large. This will make some of the smaller hannded people happy and will also make the gloves fit better, rather than having to settle for a size that is close to what you are looking for.

With an expanded size selection also comes more colors to choose from. Like the other gloves in the new line, the hybrid gloves have a basic overall color or either black or white, and have options that give a splash of color on the outer part of the glove’s padding. Right now the offerings are pretty basic. I will bet they plan to add the blue-steel, sand and orchid colors like they do for the sparring gloves.

The weight of the gloves is still about 7 ounces. The shape of the padding is still the same too. They are designed to provide more padding when striking. I personally like these gloves over the MMA and sparring styles. Those 2 style gloves can dictate the type of workout one will have. You will not see anyone doing any ground work while wearing the sparring gloves… Just does not work too good.

Fairtex and Combat Sports also make a hybrid style gloves. The Fairtext model has a bunch of padding concentrated over the knuckles and weigh in at about 5 and a half ounces each. The Combat Sports version weigh about 7 ounces each and a very similar in design to the Hayabusa brand.

Next time I will be covering the new Sparring gloves. These are also a great addition to their new Tokushu series. Don’t forget to checkout the pictures I put out a few days ago. You can see the differences in the glove designs and the new colors.

Hayabusa MMA Fightwear has been doing everything right these days. They recently announced a key endorsement by MMA fighter George St. Pierre and most recently they launched a new line of MMA fight gear, the Tokushu Series. This post will provide a look at the Hayabusa 4oz MMA Fight Glove’s new features.

We will begin on the inside of the glove, the open palm. This part of the glove is exactly the same design. The “Y” shaped design similar to the Fairtex glove. A side by side comparison shows that stitch for stitch the design has not changed, which is a good thing- why change a something that is well designed.

The logo placements have also been changed. The once horizontal stamp on the front of the glove has been set vertical. A small stamp has been added to the inside strap and the circled-bird design on the outer wrist has been replaced with a Chinese character.

The all leather outer construction has been replaced with synthetic leather. A video I watched produced by Hayabusa outlines all of the benefits of this new material including: better, longer lasting wear; less prone to scratches and abrasions. Time will tell if this holds to be true.

Colors once were a choice of black or white now include a mainly black or white glove overall with different color accents on the outer wrist area. Accents include Slate-grey and Dark-Orchid. So, basically they have added 2 new colors, bringing them to 4 total.

Another good idea, that I used to get a lot of complaints about was the size selection. The MMA Glove only came in 2 sizes- Small-Medium and Large-Extra-Large. Now they have 4 sizes- small, medium, large and extra large. This is great. No more complaints about size- now it will be “Which size do I get”.

Unlike the beefed up wrist support of the new Sparring gloves, the MMA Gloves wrist wrap is pretty much the same. They did however, add a neat little rubber grip to the end of the inner strap, that makes it easier to grab and pull apart.

The inside lining of the gloves have a new superior wicking material. This will help the gloves breath better and absorb more sweat. The more breathable material will also help the gloves dry quicker between uses.

I also weighed the gloves to make sure that they still came in at 4 ounces. Pretty close- they averaged around 4-4.3 ounces each.

The padding of the glove changed on the outside of the hand, in the back fist area. The previous model’s padding ended a little bit too soon, leaving an open area on the back of the hand. The new Tokushu Series MMA Gloves now cover the back of the hand.

Overall the gloves get a thumbs-up. The expanded color assortment and also size choices are going to make more shoppers happy that they have their size and color they like. The added padding will make them safer and the new outer skin will ensure they last a good long time.

Hayabusa MMA recently released a new line of MMA Fight Gear. The new line, “Tokushu”, features a new look and an expanded line of colors.

The New Gloves also feature a new skin. They are no longer made of leather, they are using something I have never heard of- “Vylar”. From what I have been able to gather, this material is much stronger than leather and also requires less maintenance and is well suited for MMA equipment.

I came accross this video that Hayabusa put out that gives a preview of the new gloves design and also tells us a little about the new Vylar material.

There was also a video about how the gloves have a new design to help avoid injuries. This is a big improvement. The main thing is the added wrist support. Wrist wrap gloves are not new, but the increase strap size and the double closure system of the Hayabusa Sparring Gloves, makes wrist infuries a thing of the past.

There you have it, some very nice gear improvments. I have also heard that the headgear and Shin guards are also being remade to the new design spec’s.

The new Hayabusa Tokushu Series MMA Gloves, I have to admit, are pretty cool. Unlike the Kanpeki Series, that did not go over real well, well for me. The Tokushu have several new features that make them worth the higher price tag. This article will touch on a few of these new features and also note any differences between the new and old versions.

One of the new features that I really like is the beefed-up wrist support. I have had many students over the years hit a bag too hard and at the same time not hit it directly, causing them to twist their wrist- much like a twisted ankle. The new MMA Gloves, Hybrid and Hayabusa 16oz Sparring Gloves have this reinforced wrist support.

The wrist wrap locking mechanism is similar to their previous model, except the straps are much thicker and the old-style gloves. The inner locking strap was not nearly as thick as the new Tokushu style wrist wrap.

A second feature I like is the breathable mesh on the inside of the glove, over the palm and inner fingers. Your hands are going to get sweaty- may as well get some air flow. This also helps the gloves dry faster between workouts.

The stitching has also changed. I don’t know if this will provide any added protection, or any other benefit, besides looking really cool. The way that the new style separates the padding into more sections make them look a bit more interesting and also provide different color combinations.

The previous version of the MMA Gloves only came in 2 sizes: Small/Medium, and Large/X-Large. These gloves now come in Medium, Large and X-large. These new sizes give every customer a choice for a better fit.

The color selection has also been expanded. They now have the basic Black or White gloves and you can choose different color accents. Nice! Accent colors include: Slate (grey); Orchid (purple); Burnt Crimson (maroon); Desert Sand (tan-ish) and Steel Blue (dark blue).

Hayabusa has also revamped the Hybrid style gloves. The new design has all of the improvements that the Hayabusa MMA Gloves and the Sparring Gloves have. They do not, however, have the expanded lines of colors. They stuck with the basic Black with white trim and white with black trim.

That should give you a good idea of the new Hayabusa Tokushu Series MMA gear. The wrist support has been improved along with a better size selection and also an expanded line of colors to choose from. I think this move to the new series was a good one. Rather than a whole new line- they are replacing their core gear line.

P.S. I also heard that they will be adding the Pro Striking Shin Guards to the Tokushu line. I have an email into the wholesale director asking if they are adding the Hayabusa Pro MMA Headgear too. We see… I would not be surprised if they also add the Grappling shin guards as well. It only makes sense. People like to have matching gear so the color accents need to match.

Selecting the right kind of MMA Shorts is essential. Fight Shorts, Board Shorts, Grappling Shorts, Muay Thai Shorts- if you are a fighter, you need to get the right kind of shorts for the type of fighting you will be … Continue reading →

Selecting the right kind of MMA Shorts is essential. Fight Shorts, Board Shorts, Grappling Shorts, Muay Thai Shorts- if you are a fighter, you need to get the right kind of shorts for the type of fighting you will be doing. Features can be the most important thing to look for.

Split Outer Seam

When grappling or kicking, a split outer seam allows unrestricted movement. In the heat of battle you don’t want your legs getting bound up in your shorts when you are rolling and you sure don’t want you kick hindered either.

Fabric

The fabric, believe it or not, is also very important. Micro-Fiber (a fancy name for Polyester) is probably the best material. It is very smooth and does not bind. Unlike cotton, once it gets wet from sweat it will not stick plus cotton absorbs and gets stiff. Polyester repels and remains smooth on the skin.

Adjustable Waist Band

When you go down to the ground, a tight fit in the waist is important. Almost all MMA shorts have a draw string and some have a rubber-like inner waist band. This grips the waist, keeping the shorts from spinning around on you!

Coolness Factor

OK. Yes, MMA shorts have to look cool too. The days of dorky speedo-types are almost over… There are about a billion short makers out there and a few make good performing shorts that look cool too!

Length and Baggy

The longer shorts are and the more stylish and the less baggy- the less nerdy you look. You need to consider the longer the shorts and the tighter- the more they are going to slow you down. With baggy shorts, you will have a greater range of motion when grappling. Try to find something in between.

Inner Leg Seam

When competing, you need to give yourself every advantage. You can even take a small thing like the inner seam of your shorts and make it an advantage. There are now shorts, like Century’s, that are not only more breathable, but also have some grip. When in the guard position you can get a better grip on your opponent.
