The New Standard in MMA Gear

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

Modern MMA fight training is about to enter a new era. No longer is the same old lame training gear ok. Stopping to change MMA gear to suit the days training lesson will have you training to wait or hesitate. A good example is what one of my instructors used to say:

“When you throw a kick- swing all the way through, don’t stop and pull back! If you train to stop and pull your kicks, when you actually fight, you’ll pull your kicks then!”

As the sport of MMA evolves, the equipment has to keep pace or you will be at a disadvantage. As the fight game gets more competitive you need every advantage you can get. You never know when a decision may rest on your ability to transition from the ground to standup- without hesitation!

If you have ever done any weight training, you know that bodybuilders are constantly looking for tricks, anything, to get that extra edge that can make their workout payoff. MMA fight training is now entering this phase of the sport. As fighters train they are looking for that small training tip or trick that can squeak them through a close decision.

The MMA gear that modern fighters train with is in need of some serious reinvention. Ever notice every glove looks the same… Same features… Same look. Shin guards are the same but they can be even worse. Shin guards come in 2 flavors- grappling and stand up. If you’re rolling you need guards that won’t shift. If you are doing stand up, you just want protection. You don’t care about much than the application. Wake-up call! As MMA, Mixed Martial Arts, fighters- you need something that will work without having to stop or worry about whether they will suit the need.

Grappling & Striking Shin Guards

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a shin guard that had the extra padding required for serious striking and also had the staying ability of the grappling shin guards? Combat sports tried to solve this by making a set of shin guards that had Velcro strap-like socking as an attachment, with some extra padding. In my opinion they fell short. The sock-like straps are worse than regular straps and the padding was not reinforced enough to add any further protection.

Plus the nightmare of getting the grappling style shin guards off. OMG!!!

I have a pair of guards returned by a customer that have the main pad almost ripped from the sleeve. The person had a real hard time getting them off and wound up destroying them. I had to eat the ruined pair…

Small/Med
Large/X-Large

The Gloves come in Black with the classic Red Logo and are also available with the Silver “distressed” looking logo

There are no surprizes with the sizes. As a person of average build, 6 foot 200 pounds, the Large/X-Large fit best. If you are looking for a tight fit, you could go with the smaller size- but they will be tight. Don’t forget to consider hand and wraps too…

The gloves are great at first, but after a while they begin to fray along the edges and one of my students complained that they were bothering one of his fingers. The simulated leather is what makes them not one of my first choices. I do like the long wrist strap that allows for increased wrist support. Another plus- they don’t cost a lot so if you go through them quick it will not be as painful.

East Coast Meets West Coast – Renegade MMA Gear and Nevertap Fightwear

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

Renegade MMA Gear and Nevertap Fightwear are in talks surrounding a possible mutually beneficial business arrangement. Renegade MMA Gear is an emerging Florida based Mixed Martial Arts Gear retailer and manufacturer. Renegade’s president, Mark Beagle, is a martial arts school owner in West Pam Beach Florida. Beagle has been in the Martial Arts business many years and has been practicing Taekwondo, Ryuku Kempo and Hapkido for over 25 years. Renegade MMA Gear is Martial Arts Supply Company by “Martial Artists, for Martial Artists.” Renegade does not have its own line of apparel.

Nevertap Fightwear is owned by California resident Rick “The General” Cartwright. Nevertap has a strong presence on the west coast and Hawaii and is now branching out into Florida. Cartwright also has a long history in the martial arts and a passion for the Mixed Martial Arts sport and many years practicing Kung Fu.

Together Nevertap Fightwear and Renegade MMA Gear want to give the MMA Gear Retail giants a run for their money. The 2 companies offer official UFC Gloves, Assorted MMA Gloves, MMA Shorts, Rash Guards, MMA Shin Guards and other MMA Gear. Nevertap Fightwear carries a popular line of novelty T-Shirts and women’s wear. The Company is also releasing a new line of MMA Fightwear as well as Renegade MMA’s very own MMA Training Gloves.

“We’re each going to start on one side of the country and meet in the middle somewhere,” said Beagle. Both companies pride themselves on personal contact with their customers and fans and also bring to bear their many years of martial arts experience. They truly are MMA retailers “by Martial Artists, For Martial Artists!”

Materials

“My Little Friend” by RenegadeMMAgear are made of genuine, top quality leather. The UFC Trainer is made of some type of simulated leather. The problem with simulated leather is that once it starts to wear, it does not stretch then regain its shape like real leather, it tears.

Both of these gloves do have a good wrist strap. The strap itself is long enough to go around the wrist 2 times. But I must say, and since I am writing the review, that the tie goes to the My Little Friend glove. A good wrist support system is very important, especially in training gloves. When you are beating away on a heavy bag, it’s easy to twist your wrist just like you would twist your ankle. I know, I have used the old style bag gloves that have no wrist support and I have messed up my wrist.

Coolness

How cool a glove is almost as important as how it performs. The My Little Friend is probably the coolest glove on the market. That’s what separates Tony tribute glove from all the others- it’s also  a quality glove. If you stick the UFC trainer in your opponent’s face you can’t say much else. With the Tony- “Say Hello to My Little Friend”.

 Craftsmanship

Both the Century brand and the Renegade MMA brand have a great deal of quality in their products. Again, since I am the writer- the Tony model takes it.

MMA Competition Glove

Combat Sports equipment is “Engineered for Top Performance”.

Combat Sports has become one of the hottest brands in the Combat Sports equipment industry with over 25 distributors worldwide. Amongst Combat Sports’ collection of fighting gear, they have different types of excellent Gloves.

They have many varieties of gloves depending on your usage, whether it is training, mma fighting, etc. They have Mexican style pro training gloves, MMA Shin Guards, grappling shin guards, Combat Sports Gloves, mma grappling gloves, mma rash guards, ufc gloves, mma training gloves and more.

They have gloves for training, sparring and competition. Depending on what style of glove you are looking for, Combat Sports has a glove for everyone.

As someone that does a lot of bag work, I really like the wrist support provided by this glove. It has a longer than normal strap that allows a double wrap. The glove also comes with a good ¾ inches of padding that will save your hands from being busted up.

When it comes to price, the Combat sports UFC Gloves can be expensive if you don’t know where to shop. Do a google on renegademmagear and you will find one of the best kept secrets for find inexpensive gear on the internet. When you are shopping, keep in mind the purpose or use you are going to be using the equipment for. You don’t need to spend a ton of money on training gloves that will just get worn out real quick.

I’ll tell you a secret you probably already know- you can get the same quality gloves for half the price. You can get gloves made of real leather with a cool look and professional quality. Like I said, go to renegademmagear and see for yourself.

The Iceman – Chuck Liddell

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

Chuck Liddell
(born December 17, 1969), also known as “The Iceman” is an American Mixed Martial Artist (MMA) who fights for the Ultimate Fighting Championship.  A former UFC light heavyweight
champion, Liddell has an extensive background in kickboxing and collegiate wrestling.  He is noted within the MMA community for his exceptional takedown defense and knockout ability. He is a fearsome opponent, his stand up and especially as a counter-puncher and has endeared himself as a fan favorite He is generally regarded as a stand-up fighter, relying primarily on his background in Kempo Karate and Koei-Kan Karate, while using his wrestling skills to defend against takedowns.

Liddell began training in Koei-Kan karate when he was 12 years old, though he’s best known for his association with the Kempo Karate style taught by John Hackleman.  Hackleman’s style relies less on katas than “natural fighting techniques and conditioning,” according to its inventor.  Along with this, there is a tattoo that reads “Kempo” on Liddell’s shoulder.  Chuck continued to train in Karate through high school and college.  In 1993, Chuck viewed the very first UFC I on Pay-Per-View and became immediately intrigued by the sport.  Chuck believed that the UFC was an excellent mix of his skills, background, and talent.  It became Chuck’s goal to fight in mixed martial arts and the UFC.  When Liddell started his MMA career, he began to train in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under John Lewis in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Liddell made his UFC debut in 1998 with a decision victory over Noe Hernandez.  Despite a submission loss to top contender Jeremy Horn shortly after, Liddell began establishing his reputation as a devastating striker with victories over Kevin Randleman, Murilo Bustamante, Vitor Belfort, Renato Sobral and Tito Ortiz over the next few years.  By 2002, Liddell was considered the number one contender for the UFC light heavyweight title, with growing popularity and support from his fans.
